In recent days, alarming messages have been circulating on social media, claiming that women are being kidnapped and harassed in broad daylight both inside and outside Kolkata’s popular Quest Mall. Out of several, one such viral WhatsApp message, shared by a user named Adarsh Poddar, detailed an incident where two women were allegedly harassed by two men outside a restaurant at Quest Mall. According to the message, the women were approached by the men, who proceeded to make inappropriate advances and harass them, even grabbing one of the women’s upper body. The message also claimed that the harassers brazenly told the women to report the incident to the police, stating, “Go to whichever police station you want, they won’t do anything to us.” The message concluded by urging others to avoid visiting Quest Mall until "things settle down," calling the situation a "red alert."
Another viral tweet from a user claimed that "Kolkata has gone rogue," implying that the city’s safety had deteriorated, and that incidents like these were happening frequently with little intervention from authorities. The tweet, which went viral quickly, accused the police and mall authorities of negligence.
Taaza TV to investigate the matter further had spoken to mall authorities and Police regarding the authenticity of these messages being circulated and both Quest Mall and Kolkata Police have firmly refuted these claims, calling them baseless and spread by “mischievous and vested elements.” Quest Mall issued an official statement on their social media accounts, reassuring patrons that their safety remains the highest priority. The statement read: “There have been some fake reports regarding safety at Quest. Quest remains a safe and secure destination, with 24/7 security measures, round-the-clock CCTV coverage, and over 200 security personnel, committed to creating a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for our valued patrons.”
They also encouraged the public to verify any information before sharing it and to avoid falling for misleading narratives. “Your safety matters to us,” the statement emphasized, underscoring the mall’s commitment to creating a safe environment.
Kolkata Police also stepped in to address the rumors, posting on X (formerly Twitter) from the official handle of DCP Southeast Division. Their post read, “Fake posts and rumors being spread in c/w [connection with] a shopping mall at South East Division on social media by some mischievous and vested elements. Kolkata Police assures that no such incident has taken place.” The police have been actively debunking these rumors to prevent further panic and confusion, stating that these claims were fabricated to disrupt public peace and malign the reputation of the shopping mall.
Both mall authorities and the police have urged the public to be cautious about what they share on social media, as such false information can easily escalate and cause unnecessary fear among citizens. With over 200 security personnel, continuous CCTV monitoring, and other security protocols in place, Quest Mall maintains that it is one of the safest shopping destinations in the city. The management has also provided a helpline number for any queries from patrons to further reinforce trust and transparency.
Public Response
While many patrons expressed relief after the clarification, some remain concerned about how quickly such false information spread.
Authorities are also exploring if any legal actions can be taken against those who spread such dangerous misinformation, which could result in public unrest. As the investigation into the origins of these rumors continues, Kolkata Police have promised to remain vigilant and responsive.
In the meantime, both mall authorities and the police encourage the public to remain calm and continue their regular activities at Quest Mall, without fear of any danger.
